Since the arrival of TikTok in India it has gained a huge popularity in Indian market with a large number of active users and helped in making huge profit for the company including with some controversies.
Now Bytedance, the parent company of TikTok has launched Resso, its music streaming app in India described as a “social music streaming app” that allows users to share lyrics, comments and other user-generated content with each other.
The company has not disclosed the full catalog of music available on the app but it is noted that the company has secured licensing deals with International publishers Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Merlin and Beggars Group as well as big publishers of the Indian market, including T-Series, Saregama, Zee Music, YRF Music, Times Music, Tips, Venus and Shemaroo, as well as Speed Records, Anand Audio, Lahiri Music, Divo and Muzik 247.
The most notable name of the catalog is the Universal Music as Bytedance’s biggest rival Tencent took 10% of the stake at around $3.4 billion last year, which could be the main reason behind Universal Music might not be available on Resso.
Resso is following the same free to use and ad-based model as its sister app TikTok and also the same route that big streaming companies like Spotify have taken.
The free tier of the app includes ads and offers music streaming at up to 128 Kbps while the Premium tier offers music streaming to 256 Kbps, includes downloads and the ability to skip tracks starting at Rs. 99/month ($1.35/month) on Android and Rs. 119/month ($1.62) on iOS.
According to Sensor Tower, the app has approximately 1 million App Store and Google Play installations out of which 600,000 of these installs in India, and 400,000 in Indonesia.
The music streaming services in India is probably the most competitive service that is already packed with global and local brands like Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Apple Music and YouTube Music competing with each other.
The user interface of Resso is designed to persuade users to share lyrics directly on other platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and yes you can also share on TikTok.
