In present days stress is becoming a major health issue and we all try various ways like meditation or yoga to relax our mind, soul, and body. Music therapy is also known to prove effective in relaxing.
UK Neuroscientists from Mindlab International conducted a study in which they instructed participants to solve difficult puzzles while they were attached to sensors and listening to different songs. While solving the puzzles participants experienced stress and the scientists measured their brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing.
The study found that the song “Weightless” helped in reducing 65 percent of participants’ overall anxiety, and a 35 percent reduction in their usual physiological resting rates.
The song “Weightless” was specifically constructed by Marconi Union with a group of sound therapists. Its carefully arranged harmonies, rhythms, and bass lines help slow a listener’s heart rate, reduce blood pressure and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol which could help in reducing deaths due to stress. A recent study claimed by Harvard and Stanford found health issues from job stress alone cause more deaths than diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or influenza.
Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab International said, “Weightless’ was so effective, many women became drowsy and I would advise against driving while listening to the song because it could be dangerous.”
