Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX explains with more details how humans not only humans can reach Mars but he also mentioned details to set up a sustainable city on the Red Planet that can serve the resident. Elon Musk and his Space Technology company has a long-term vision to make — humans an interplanetary species (since Aliens haven’t been found yet).
Replying to fans on Twitter, Elon Musk said that his stated launch cost of only around $2 million per Starship flight is essentially required, he also explained that to “make a sustainable city on Mars” a reality SpaceX will need to build and fly about 1,000 Starships according to his estimates, that will be needed to transport cargo, infrastructure, and crew to Mars in the time period of at least 20 years, since planetary alignment only really allows for a realistically achievable Mars flight once every two years.
With more details to his projection, he said that the Starship’s design is intended to maximize re-use and he noted that the starship must ideally be able to fly up to three times per day, which calculates to more than 1,000 flights per year.
Elaborating his projection if the company built around 100 starships and each of them can transport as much as 100-ton to orbit than on annual basis — SpaceX will be able to launch upwards of 10 million tons to orbit per year.
He also noted that the total cargo bearing spacecraft which are currently in operations has a capacity of just 500 tons per year and around half of them are operated by SpaceX’s Falcon series rockets.
To build a sustainable city on Mars, we first need to reach Mars with a crewed flight, but before that NASA is projected to land humans back on the lunar surface and SpaceX has planned to land Starship on the moon by 2022 which will help in the preparation for the landing.
