A new investigation from The New York Times reveals that hundreds of law enforcement companies around the United States have started using a new facial recognition system developed by Clearview AI. According to the NYT report, the database for the system is made up of billions of images scraped from millions of sites including Facebook, YouTube, and Venmo.
If you care about your privacy then you must read this article because this system is way more controversial than any other system currently available that raises concerns over privacy and the images scarped from the internet violate terms of services of many websites including social media.
NYT writes that the system has already helped police solve crimes including shoplifting, identify theft, credit card fraud, murder, and child sexual exploitation. In one instance, Indiana State Police were able to solve a case within 20 minutes by using the app.
