A US Navy Ship in the Persian Gulf reportedly drops down an Iranian Drone using a new Anti-Drone System which came under a thousand yards, according to Military.com.
US Department of Defense released a statement confirming that the USS Boxer was moving through the Strait of Hormuz when it was approached by a fixed-wing drone which “closed within a threatening range,” which prompted the ship’s crew to take “defensive action.”
USNI News says that this is the “first known kill by a new generation of electronic warfare and directed energy weapons” by the United States.
The US Marines USS Boxer used a new system called an MRZR LMADIS (Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System) is seen mounted on a Polaris MRZR vehicle seen on DoD photos of the ship as reported by C4ISRNET.
The new Anti-Drone system is equipped with two vehicles — one a “command node,” and the other a “sensor node.” The vehicles are grouped with radar sensors, cameras, and radio frequency detectors and jammers. The system has been tested out by the ground forces and Military.com reported that the system has begun testing by the Navy and Marines earlier this year.
US Military is developing several new systems to tackle the drones and missiles. The US Air Force unveiled a new system called THOR (Tactical High Power Microwave Operational Responder) in June, designed to take down swarms of drones.
