Google has officially announced that they are shutting down “Allo”, which leads to another failed chat app expirement. The news is not new as Google had already stopped investment in Allo back in April. The head of the Communications group at Google, Anil Sabharwal, said that “[Allo] as a whole has not achieved the level of traction we’d hoped for.”
Allo “will continue to work until March 2019”, Google says, and users will be able to export their conversation history till that date.
Verizon is officially launching the RCS Chat on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL on December 6th. The RCS Chat will be carrier-based in its implementation and could give Google some sort of iMessage contender for Android Google’s been looking for all these years.
RCS Chat will not be run by Google, so the Google Hangouts service will be available to all existing users.
