Delhi Metro Airport Express now offers Free WiFi in the moving train

Delhi Metro Airport Express

Since it’s launch in the late 2002 Delhi Metro has been one of the most innovative rapid transit systems in the world and today Delhi metro has added a new milestone to its journey with the launch of Free high-speed WiFi services on the Airport Express line.

Since 2016, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been providing free WiFi services on a few metro stations but this is the first time that the commuters will be able to access free WiFi services on the train while traveling in it. The service has been started with the Airport Express Line that stretches across 22.7 kilometers and has six metro stations.

As per the DMRC officials, the WiFi service will be completely free from commuters and it will provide up to 300 Mbps of internet speed with no download limits or the number of user limits. After the launch of this service, India’s Delhi Metro becomes the fourth country after Russia, South Korea, and China to offer free Wi-Fi services in an underground metro train.

As per DMRC the technology behind the service is that DMRC has engaged a 2-level network to allow Wi-Fi access on the moving train. In the first level, DMRC is using a train-to-tunnel (T2T) radio network that passes the signal from base stations inside the tunnel to a portable station aboard the head cars. In the second level, DMRC uses an inner-train network transmit signal from the Wireless Access Point in each metro train to users onboard.

The project for providing Wi-Fi connectivity in Delhi Metro Network is being implemented by a consortium of M/s Maxima Digital Pvt. Ltd. (Partner of MaximaTelecom, Russia), M/s Techno Sat Comm (India) Pvt Ltd and M/s Sifi Technologies.

How to Access Free Wi-Fi Service on Delhi Metro Airport Express Line:

While traveling in the Delhi Metro Airport Express from today onwards, the commuters will find a new “METROWIFI_FREE” network available on WiFi.

  1. You just have to tap on the mentioned Wi-Fi network and after the connection made a new browser page will open requesting your phone number.
  2. Entering your phone number and OTP sent to you on your entered phone number you will be logged in and will be allowed access to the free Wi-Fi connection.

Currently, the service is only operational on Airport Express (Orange Line) but is expected to be expanded to other Delhi Metro lines (possibly starting with the Blue and Yellow line) later in 2020.
