Caltech & NASA develops ‘Transforming’ Drone that blast from a Cannon

Caltech and NASA JPL developed SQUID Transforming Drone

A team of researchers from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) developed a new prototype of the Streamlined Quick Unfolding Investigation Drone or SQUID which on fold looks like a American Football but when its blasted from the cannon it deploys its rotors and maintains stability for controlled flight.

In the above video it has been displayed that the researchers launched a drone from a pneumatic baseball pitching machine placed on a pick up truck traveling at 50 miles per hour.

According to a paper, the prototype “the design is 3D printable, launches from a three-inch diameter barrel, and has sufficient thrust to carry a significant payload.” the current design follows a 27 centimeters long, has an 8-cm diameter, and weights 530 grams. Currently, this drone is intended for research purposes only, but this technology could be used in the commercial market soon.
