E-Commerce tech giant Amazon has finally launched its online food delivery service named Amazon Food in India starting with limited places in Bengaluru.
Amazon was expected to launch Amazon Food in March, but the service announcement halted because of the nationwide lockdown announced by the Government of India in late March to curb the spread of the virus in the country.
The E-commerce giant had been testing its new service with select restaurants in Bengaluru before the nationwide lockdown was announced in the country.
The timing of the launch looks perfect as Zomato and Swiggy, the leaders in India’s online food delivery services are suffering from revenue cuts and laying off employees because of the Coronavirus Pandemic in India.
Amazon entering in a market that is currently dominated by the duopoly of Zomato and Swiggy that are still struggling to convert their startups into a profitable business in the country.
Amazon has been expanding its operations in India with the launch of Amazon Fresh and Amazon Prime Now to sell groceries and daily needs consumer products and also Amazon has extended its presence in the entertainment services with India specific original shows on Amazon Prime Video.
In recent weeks, Reliance Jio has received hefty investment from big investors for its Jio Platforms and we can expect Jio entering other online businesses starting with JioMart in India soon.
